Ward Schumaker - Trump Papers, a show of hand-painted broadsides

      October 23rd, 2018

'Last year I created a hand-painted book of quotes from Donald Trump and his minions, Hate Is What We Need. Chronicle Books published a facsimile edition (available at ChronicleBooks.com and Amazon.com). But this year, as lies and injustices multiplied, that seemed insufficient. So I created a second one-of-a-kind book, The Administration of Cruelty and Stupidity. I also painted 40 large broadsides, with quotations not just from Trump, but from victims who have suffered under his régime and those who have spoken out against it. We're mounting them on walls like the news of the last two years: as an onslaught, a deluge.
We invite you to see them - and hopefully be inspired to vote.'

      - Ward Schumaker -

The crowded opening reception on Saturday, 20 October, was a very emotional evening. One guest left, crying: “I just can’t take it.” People shared their anxiety about the turn-of-events in the country, the strong fear about the loss of liberties and the threats of physical violence against minorities - transgender folks, gays, people of color, Jews, reporters.

When a ten year-old girl appeared, who had created her own Trump Papers on small sheets of paper, the artist helped her mount them on a ledge in the gallery and she sold many of them – many! – for US$1 each. "We all think of her as our hope fore the future,” Ward said.

         The book’s afterword:

I am an artist, a painter – of books. Big, messy, one-of-a-kind hand-painted books. Frequently containing stenciled lettering, sloppy calligraphy, approaching and often accomplishing incomprehensibility.

Subject of these books? Beauty, for the most part, but including snippets of spiritual texts, fragments of dreams, and apparently irrelevant and/or inscrutable instructions. Not for the reader in search of plot, betterment, or popular imagery. And nothing political. Never anything political.

But then the night of horror arrived, that night in which the world itself became less comprehensible than many of us had previously assumed (and hoped) it to be: the night Donald J. Trump was elected president of the United States. Not with a majority (we all know Hillary won that) but an officially authorized win, nevertheless – a frightening, disheartening, dangerous and destructive win.

Since that night, my wife and I have awoken each day with the questions we share with so many: what new horror had Donald committed while we slept, what vile inanity had he voiced, who had become his latest victim? How much closer was the world to nuclear holocaust?

My personal vision of Beauty had always seemed sufficient subject for my painting. Living under Trump seems to have changed that. This book is a small effort to respond to Trump's menace: a collection of hard-to-believe, highly regrettable, dangerous, mean-spirited and ill-informed words from the orange-faced comb-over, himself. I am certain to have missed some of your favorites, and I am certain that each week there will be more statements that deserve to be included.

All I can answer to that is: Resist.

        Balbusso Twins - Welcome!

        February 6th, 2018

I am glad to welcome the Balbusso Twins from Milan in our group of international illustrators!

Anna+Elena=Balbusso is the signature of the twins Anna and Elena Balbusso, a multi-award-winning illustration team from Milan. Their clients include the New York Times, The New Yorker, Reader's Digest and the Figaro Group. They have illustrated over 40 books, from children's books to Margaret Atwood's distopian novel 'The Handmaid's Tale'. The critic Steven Heller described their work as "enticingly Renaissance and eerily new wave."

Anna and Elena create their artworks in mutual exchange of ideas, in continuous interaction, the result is always a collaborative one. And it is impressive. Italian art of all epochs - frescoes from ancient Rome, Italian Renaissance, Romanticism as well as modern and contemporary art - plays a key role in their works.

At the moment, the Balbusso Twins are exploring the possibilities of moving images such as gifs and animation of their works.

        Osterwalder's ArtOffice - designs a CD-Box for Achim Reichel

        October 27th, 2017

45 years after Hans-Ulrich Osterwader's design of the A. R. & Machines double album "Echo", the current OsterwaldersArtOffice was commissioned by Achim Reichel to create the visual realisation for a 10 CD box. The box, consisting of cult albums, unreleased material and new mixes, was supposed to capture the sound of that time and translate it into the present.

On behalf of BMG & Tangram, OsterwaldersArtOffice explored in several meetings with Achim Reichel the direction of the design. Part of the task was also to add a booklet to the box that shows the small archive of pictures and documents from that time and to make them - in the spirit of the echoes from Reichel's Krautrock phase – swing again. For this purpose, OsterwaldersArtOffice superimposed the existing visual material with echoes and psychedelic elements to create collages.

On September 15th 2017 Achim Reichel presented the resurrection of his innovative music project A. R. "The Art of German Psychedelic" in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie. The performance was accompanied by projections from the artwork.
